Why are some watch companies called a “manufacture?”

On the other hand, when a company makes things almost entirely of their own creation, they are elevated to the level of being a manufacture. Some examples of these companies that produce entire watches are Audemars Piquet, Vacheron Constantin, Chopard, IWC, Jaeger LeCoultre, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Zenith, and up and coming, Cartier, Breitling, and Omega. That list is, of course, up for discussion.
